The WIPP monitors volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ambient air in the contact handled (CH) Bay and in the Mezzanine area. This air monitoring is primarily conducted on each TRUDOCK where the contact handled waste containers are unloaded and prepared for disposal.
| Analytes of Interest | Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4); 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA); and trichloroethene (TCE) |
| Instruments used | Mini RAE Photo-Ionization Detector (PID) |
| Detection limits | 12.5 parts per million (PPM) is the alarm set point, which is 50 percent of the 25 PPM ceiling level. (29 CFR 1910.1000, Table Z-2) |
| Results summary | To date, the two PIDs deployed in the CH Bay, one on each TRUDock, and the one monitoring the Mezzanine, have not detected VOCs at the alarm set point in the ambient air at their respective monitoring locations. |
